meet THE sbd team
Sophie Burke Design (SBD) is an award winning Vancouver based design practice known for its creativity, subtle sophistication and warmth. The focus of our work is private homes and select retail and hospitality.
sophie burke - principal
Sophie studied design in London, and stayed on working for the preeminent firm Conran and Partners for four years. Her experience working and living in the UK and abroad cemented her love for classic, contemporary elegance and provided the backdrop for her refined design sensibility. Upon her return to Vancouver, she launched Sophie Burke Design, which blends the aesthetic she honed while abroad with the singular beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
Sophie and her team create a bespoke portfolio of work that seeks to define a new Pacific Northwest design ethos: interiors that take cues from nature—like deep colours and rugged textures—but dovetail with a global perspective.
jennifer millar - senior designer
Jennifer pursued her study of Interior Design at BCIT. After graduating with honours, she went on to work in the field of hospitality design before shifting her focus to residential interiors. Jennifer joined Sophie Burke Design in 2009.
Using her well refined aesthetic, Jennifer creates carefully curated, understated yet elegant spaces and has been lead designer on several SBD projects that have been editorially featured in both national and international publications. She loves designing for families and helping them craft the intimate spaces where they connect, share and find respite. Jennifer has a great appreciation for honest materials, pieces that are not too precious and livable spaces that reflect the character of their occupants. With an exacting attention to detail, Jennifer excels at project management and has a knack for working with our contractors and suppliers to ensure that projects run smoothly and that we deliver an amazing result to our clients.
nicole gomes - senior designer
BID NCIDQ
Nicole completed a Bachelor of Interior Design in 2010 in her hometown of Vancouver. She graduated with honors and was awarded the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia (IDIBC) Student Award for her thesis project, which focused on residential design. During her studies she worked for a residential design-build company which strengthened her understanding of the construction process. After completing her degree, she practiced at one of the top local design firms specializing in multi-unit residential design, where she developed and refined her skills.
Nicole joined SBD in 2016 to pursue a career designing homes for families. Her compassion for people is reflective in her work; Nicole finds that inspiration comes from the clients themselves, and is then translated into the design. This results in highly personalized, well thought through spaces. She values building relationships and working closely with everyone involved on a project, taking care of the collaborative process to achieve a well-considered environment. Recently, she has overseen the design and completion of various boutique hospitality projects.
Nicole enjoys starting and ending her days walking across the city, to and from the studio, and her weekends are spent enjoying the west coast, in good company.

SYDNEY EARLE - INTERMEDIATE DESIGNER
Sydney has experience in multiple facets of the design industry including multi-family residential, commercial design and high end residential. Sydney attended the British Columbia Institute of Technology where she developed her strong technical skills and harnessed her ability in conceptual thinking. She believes good design is a union of form and function and that interiors should aim to evoke an emotional response by telling visual stories.
riccardo biz - AUTOCAD TECHNICIAN
Born and raised in Italy, Riccardo studied at the University of Padoa where he obtained a degree in Wood Technology and Furniture Design. He then moved to Vancouver and completed his Interior Design degree at LaSalle College. STEPH SMITH - JUNIOR DESIGNER
Born and raised in Vancouver, Steph has always found solace in nature and drawn inspiration from the beauty of the West Coast. After obtaining a General Arts Degree from McGill University, Steph returned to Vancouver where she worked in sales for several years. Looking to switch her focus to something more creative, Steph pursued her study of Interior Design at BCIT, where she gained her diploma with honours.
Steph believes that great design goes beyond aesthetics; it should evoke emotion, elevate functionality, and reflect the unique personality of its inhabitants. By combining creativity with strategic thinking, Steph strives to create environments that not only look beautiful but also enhance the quality of life for those who experience them.
In her spare time, you can find Steph walking her sheepdog Stevie, skiing at Whistler, or exploring BC's coastline.
