SAKINAW LAKE

This modern home (architecture by Woven Architecture and Design) hugs the shore of a remote lake in BC where crisp architectural detailing meets the rugged, natural landscape. Our challenge was not to compete with the exterior geography, but rather to complement it with a calm and expansive living space. We wanted to have the space feel visually grounded and use materials that echo the strength of the outdoors; solid hemlock cladding, white oak millwork, blackened steel, and natural quartzite can hold their own against the drama of the landscape you see out the windows. We used a restrained palette of greys, whites, black, and wood tones; texture was critical to the soft furnishings to ensure the space remained warm and cozy against the extensive glazing. We commissioned Barter Designs, located close by on BC’s Sunshine Coast, to make the solid wood dining table from local hemlock, as well as smaller accent tables and accessories. Our goal with the interior design was to create multiple intimate and inviting spaces that could accommodate all ages; the homeowners have a baby, as well as two teenage boys, and they wanted the space to be gathering place for friends and family.
