NEWMARKET HOUSE
The concept for this home was inspired by the surrounding coastal rainforest and the homeowners love for mid-century design.
To enter the house you are brought down several steps, through the soft pink front door, into the main floor of the home. This level stretches out and connects seamlessly with the outdoors; the kitchen, dining and living room areas open up and are embraced by the greenbelt that backs this site. The upper floor contains the sleeping and bathing areas with private views to the treetops.
The materials in this home were selected to reflect a mid-century modern aesthetic while balancing the young family’s light, fresh westcoast lifestyle. The homeowners wanted the interior to feel bright and clean. Therefore, a combination of white oak flooring and white millwork was paired with era specific walnut wood accents and playful tile shapes and patterns. Finishes were chosen with a family-state-of-mind - durable, casual and inviting. Throughout the interiors, black accents were integrated to add visual contrast as well as to tie in with the all black exterior of the house. The horizontal plane was emphasized to express low mod living and pull your eye to the outdoors. The finishing was kept minimal or removed completely, such as drywall returns at the windows eliminating visually distracting details. Furniture, lighting and accessories add to the mid-century style through the use of timeless classics and pops of colour.
